A propane system may look fine while a loose fitting, damaged pipe, or recent modification creates a hidden leak path. A propane pressure test checks whether gas piping can hold a specified pressure without an unexplained drop. Homeowners most often encounter pressure testing after new gas piping is installed or existing piping is changed. A different procedure, called a leak check, commonly applies when propane service has been interrupted or a tank has run empty. Knowing the difference helps you understand what the technician is doing, why appliances may be disconnected, and when propane can safely return to service.

What Does a Propane Pressure Test Actually Check?

Piping Integrity

The main goal is to confirm that piping, joints, fittings, and connections can hold pressure without leaking. A pressure drop may point to a defect unless temperature change or another known condition explains the movement.

Test Pressure

Pressure testing uses pressure above the system’s normal operating level. Under the 2021 International Fuel Gas Code, test pressure is generally at least 1.5 times the proposed maximum working pressure and not less than 3 psi.

Test Medium

New gas piping is commonly tested with air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or another approved inert gas. Propane itself should not be used as the pressure-test medium for the new-piping procedure described by NFPA 54.

Gauge Reading

A manometer or suitable pressure gauge allows the technician to watch the test pressure over a set period. A stable reading supports the conclusion that the tested piping section is holding pressure.

Test Duration

The required holding time depends on the code, pipe volume, building type, and system design. The 2021 International Fuel Gas Code sets a minimum 10-minute test for qualifying single-family dwelling systems with small pipe volumes.

Failed Test

If pressure falls and the change cannot be explained by another cause, the piping does not pass. The technician must locate and correct the problem before the affected piping goes into service.

When Does Your Home Need a Propane Pressure Test?

New Installation

New propane piping should be tested before it is placed into operation. This applies when a propane system is installed in a new house or new gas piping is added during a conversion from another fuel. The test verifies piping integrity before normal propane pressure reaches the line. It also gives inspectors and installers a documented point of acceptance.

Added Appliance

Adding a propane range, fireplace, dryer, water heater, generator, or other appliance may require new piping. The added or modified piping should be tested according to the locally adopted fuel-gas rules.

Piping Repair

Repairing or replacing gas piping can trigger another pressure test on the affected section. Iowa’s LP-gas rules, for example, require pressure testing after certain modifications or repairs, showing how state requirements can add specific procedures.

Remodeling Work

Kitchen remodels, additions, basement projects, and equipment relocations often disturb existing gas lines. If piping gets extended, rerouted, disconnected, or rebuilt, testing may be required before propane returns.

System Conversion

Changing appliance locations, regulator arrangements, or system pressure may require more than a simple connection check. A propane professional should review the piping design, appliance demand, regulator capacity, and testing requirements.

Local Inspection

A building department, fire official, mechanical inspector, or propane authority may require documented testing before approving new work. Permit and inspection rules differ widely across the United States.

How Is a Pressure Test Different From a Leak Check?

Pressure Test

A pressure test primarily verifies newly installed, replaced, or modified piping before normal service. Appliances are typically isolated because test pressure can be much higher than the operating pressure they are designed to receive.

Leak Check

A leak check confirms that an existing propane distribution system is free of hazardous leaks before or after certain service conditions. PERC describes residential safety inspections as covering containers, regulators, appurtenances, and, depending on the inspection type, propane appliances.

Empty Tank

If your propane tank runs completely out, do not simply refill it and turn the valve back on yourself. PERC states that a qualified professional should perform a leak check when gas service is restored after an out-of-gas condition.

Service Interruption

A shutoff or interruption of propane service can also trigger a leak check before appliances return to operation. AmeriGas identifies out-of-gas deliveries and other interruptions of service as conditions requiring leak-check procedures under its safety practices.

Appliance Check

A piping pressure test does not prove that every furnace, water heater, range, fireplace, or generator operates correctly. Appliances have their own valves, controls, ignition systems, venting, and safety devices.

Bubble Testing

A leak-detection solution can reveal bubbles at an exposed connection, but a homeowner bubble test is not a substitute for a required piping pressure test. New piping must follow the test procedure specified by code.

What Happens During a Home Propane Pressure Test?

The technician first identifies the section of piping being tested and isolates equipment that should not receive the test pressure. The line is then capped or otherwise prepared according to code, connected to the test equipment, and pressurized with the approved medium. The technician records the starting pressure and watches the gauge for the required duration. If the pressure remains within the permitted limits, the piping passes that part of the process. If the gauge falls unexpectedly, the technician finds the leak, repairs the defect, and repeats the required test. After a successful test, the system must still be returned to service correctly. That can include reconnecting appliances, purging air where required, checking operating pressure, inspecting connections, and confirming that propane appliances operate as intended. The exact sequence depends on the system and local rules.

What Should You Do If You Smell Propane?

Do not begin investigating fittings or testing lines yourself if you smell propane inside or around the home. Avoid flames, smoking materials, lights, switches, phones, and anything else that could create a spark, then leave the area immediately. If it is safe to do so, the propane supply may be shut off at the tank. From a safe location, contact your propane retailer. If you cannot reach the retailer, call 911 or the local fire department. Do not return until emergency personnel or a qualified professional says the area is safe. Before appliances operate again, the propane retailer or qualified technician should check the system and repair any leak. A pressure test may be needed if piping was damaged or repaired, while a leak check may be the correct procedure when service is simply being restored.

How Do You Keep Your Propane System Ready for Testing and Service?

Keep installation records, permits, appliance information, repair invoices, and past test documents in one property file. These records help a technician understand when piping was installed, what has changed, and which appliances connect to the system. Contact your propane retailer before remodeling, adding an appliance, relocating gas equipment, or digging near an underground line. After storms, heavy rain, or other events that may damage the tank or piping, inspect the area from a safe distance and report anything unusual. PERC also recommends professional checks when the system appears damaged. A propane pressure test is not routine paperwork. It verifies that new or changed gas piping can hold pressure before service begins. Know when your project requires a pressure test, when an interruption calls for a leak check, and leave both procedures to qualified professionals who follow your local code.

LP Propane Ignite Program – Terms and Conditions

1. Eligibility and Program Requirements
To qualify for and maintain enrollment in the LP Propane Ignite Program and receive the $0.05 per gallon fuel discount, the Customer must simultaneously enroll in and maintain active status in the following three core services:

Auto Fill Delivery: The Customer authorizes LP Propane to automatically monitor, schedule, and deliver propane to the designated tank when levels dictate, bypassing the standard Will Call scheduling requirements.

Auto Pay: The Customer must maintain a valid, authorized payment method on file (Credit Card, Debit Card, or ACH/Direct Draft). Invoices will be automatically drafted within 7 days after the delivery.

Paperless Billing: The Customer agrees to receive all invoices, statements, and program communications via email. Opting out of online billing or requesting paper statements will result in a $4.95 monthly fee and disqualification from the program.

2. Fuel Discount Terms

The $0.05 per gallon discount applies exclusively to the standard market rate of propane at the exact time of delivery.

The discount is applied automatically on invoice.

This discount cannot be combined with specific commercial contract pricing or volume discounts unless expressly authorized in writing by LP Propane.

3. Tank Monitoring and Delivery Access

LP Propane may utilize physical tank monitors or advanced usage-tracking algorithms to schedule deliveries.

Access Requirements: The Customer must ensure the propane tank is always completely accessible to delivery personnel and vehicles. The pathway must be free of obstacles, locked gates, debris, or unrestrained animals within a 100-foot radius.

Seasonal Maintenance: During winter months, the Customer is legally responsible for clearing snow, ice, and paths leading to the tank. If a delivery vehicle cannot safely access the tank, the delivery will be delayed, and any emergency filling fees incurred due to subsequent low fuel levels will be billed to the Customer.

4. Credit Status and Payment Failures

If an Auto Pay transaction is declined or fails for any reason (e.g., expired card, insufficient funds), the Customer must update their account billing details immediately. If the transaction remains unprocessed for 30 days despite attempts by LP Propane to contact the Customer, the account will be automatically unenrolled from the program.

If an account balance becomes past due, LP Propane reserves the right to suspend Auto Fill privileges, pause the $0.05 per gallon discount, and transition the account to a "Will Call / Cash on Delivery" basis until the account is brought current and after review and approval of LP Propane’s credit department.

5. Program Termination or Changes

Customer Termination: Removing any of the mandatory components (Auto Fill, Auto Pay, or Paperless Billing) constitutes voluntary termination from the program. If you would like to opt out of the Ignite program you must submit 30 day written notice

Company Modifications: LP Propane reserves the right to alter, modify, or terminate the Ignite Program framework, including discount amounts or underlying eligibility terms.
