What Homeowners Should Know About Underground Propane Tanks

Propane tanks are often associated with the familiar above-ground tanks found near homes or businesses. But with homeowners looking for the advantages of propane with none of the large outdoor tanks, underground propane is now a growing choice. A subsurface installation allows homeowners to save their landscaping and provide a better curb appeal, while also utilizing outdoor living areas. Underground propane tanks are concealed but they operate in much the same way as above ground tanks. They are used for the safe storage of propane, the delivery of gaseous propane to domestic appliances and need regular inspection and maintenance to guarantee a safe and reliable supply. The main difference is in their installation and extra protection taken before they are installed to protect the tank from underground conditions. When it comes to selecting an underground propane tank, there’s more to it than just looks. It is important for homeowners to know about installation, maintenance, accessibility and working with qualified propane professionals throughout the life of the system.

How Underground Propane Tanks Work

Installed Below the Surface

Underground propane tanks are buried underground and the dome housing is visible above ground unlike above ground tanks. This configuration reduces the visual impact and provides access to key system elements. Reliable performance is assured during proper installation. Professional placement for long-term operation.

Protective Exterior Coatings

Special steel coatings are used to manufacture underground tanks to help prevent corrosion by soil moisture and underground conditions. Protective finishes enhance durability. Good construction promotes longevity. There is a direct link between quality materials and reliability.

Cathodic Protection Systems

Many underground propane tanks are equipped with cathodic protection, which is a system to help prevent corrosion from contact with the surrounding soil. The protection system is checked regularly to ensure proper operation. Preventative technology extends equipment life! Professional monitoring enhances reliability.

Accessible Service Dome

The service dome stays above ground, while the tank is buried. This enclosure is for accessing propane delivery valves, gauges, regulators and other parts required for inspections, maintenance, and propane deliveries. Regular maintenance can be carried out because of easy access. For the convenience of others, visible elements enhance usability.

Fuel Delivery Works the Same Way

Underground tanks are filled in a similar manner to the above-ground tanks. The delivery guys have no need to dig up the tank to connect to the fill valve inside. Convenience is facilitated by standard delivery procedures. Accessibility for services enhances efficiency of service.

Homeowners should also keep in mind future landscaping plans. The tank is to be concealed, but the service dome should be left open for deliveries and maintenance. Do not block access to large buildings, patios, retaining walls or permanent landscaping. Talk to a qualified propane supplier before installation to make sure the system is configured to accommodate your current and future property requirements.

Why Professional Installation Matters

Experts are needed for the installation of underground propane tanks and equipment. Experts assess the property, decide on a suitable installation site, excavate the site, install corrosion protection systems as needed, and ensure all safety and operational requirements are met. Professional installation also ensures the long-term performance of propane systems. High-quality backfilling, drainage design, and service dome installation help to ensure years of reliable service. Hiring experienced propane experts from the start gives homeowners peace of mind that the system is installed properly and will be more easily maintained during its lifespan.

Hidden Convenience With Reliable Performance

Homeowners do not have to sacrifice the dependable supply of propane they receive from an above-ground system for the convenience of maintaining the aesthetic appearance of the property, and they can enjoy all of the benefits of a propane system with an underground tank. They are often a desirable choice for many residential applications because of their robust design, built-in corrosion protection, and secret design. The underground tanks must be inspected, maintained and professionally serviced regularly like any propane system to ensure reliable operation. Maintaining easy access to the service dome, checking the area around the roof and adhering to recommended maintenance schedules all help to ensure long-term reliability. With the help of a qualified propane supplier and knowledge about the special requirements of propane installations underground, homeowners can get the propane they need efficiently while keeping their outdoor area clean and looking great for years.
