Hydronic tubing carries heated water through the floor. Loop spacing, water flow, floor construction, and room heat loss determine how much heat each zone must receive. The tubing distributes heat rather than consuming propane directly.

Refill Access

Long outages can interrupt roads, delivery schedules, and normal propane service. A tank sized only for ordinary household use may require refilling sooner once a generator starts consuming fuel. PERC notes that larger on-site propane storage can extend backup-power runtime when refueling becomes difficult during emergencies.

Shared Loads

10 kW Generator

Generac’s current 10 kW standby generator lists propane consumption of about 0.94 gallon per hour at 50% load and 1.6 gallons per hour at full load. At full load for 48 continuous hours, that rate would equal roughly 76.8 gallons.

14 kW Generator

The current 14 kW Generac model lists approximately 1.76 gallons per hour at 50% load and 2.92 gallons per hour at full load. Actual outage consumption will rise and fall as household electrical demand changes.

18 kW Generator

Generac lists its 18 kW model at about 1.65 gallons per hour at 50% load and 2.87 gallons per hour at full load. This shows why generator wattage alone should not be used to estimate propane consumption. Always use the specifications for the exact model.

24 kW Generator

A current 24 kW Generac standby generator lists about 2.45 gallons per hour at half load and 3.71 gallons per hour at full load. Running continuously at full load for 48 hours would consume about 178 gallons.

28 kW Generator

Generac’s 28 kW model lists approximately 2.23 gallons per hour at 50% load and 3.97 gallons per hour at full load. At that maximum published rate, 48 hours of operation would consume roughly 191 gallons.

Actual Usage

A standby generator does not necessarily run at full electrical load throughout an outage. Refrigerators cycle, HVAC demand changes, lights switch off, and other loads come and go. Estimate fuel storage using realistic load scenarios while leaving operating margin for longer outages and other propane appliances.

What Factors Should Determine Your Propane Tank Size?

Existing Tank

Start with the tank already serving the property. A small tank that adequately supports cooking and a fireplace may be poorly matched to a large standby generator. Generac currently calls for at least a 250-gallon tank for its home standby generators.

Generator Size

An 8–12 kW generator protecting essential circuits has different fuel requirements from a 26–30 kW unit serving a large home. PERC identifies these as typical ranges for essential and high-load residential standby applications. Larger generators generally increase both fuel-flow and storage requirements.

Desired Runtime

Decide how many hours or days of backup operation you want before a propane delivery becomes necessary. A homeowner preparing for short utility interruptions may have different storage needs from someone planning for multi-day storms. Runtime goals should be calculated using the generator manufacturer’s fuel-consumption data.

Household Appliances

Add the propane demand from the furnace, boiler, water heater, range, fireplace, dryer, pool heater, and other equipment that may operate during an outage. A generator installation can expose an undersized tank, regulator, or gas line that previously handled the household load without difficulty.

Fuel Pressure

Tank size alone does not solve every generator fuel problem. Regulators and gas piping must also provide the pressure and flow required by the generator. For example, Generac’s 10 kW model specifies an LP fuel pressure range of 10 to 12 inches of water column.

Can One Tank Supply the Generator and the Home?

Yes, one properly designed propane tank can often serve both a standby generator and household appliances. The important requirement is that the entire propane system can support their combined peak demand. Suppose a winter outage causes the generator, furnace, water heater, and fireplace to operate within the same period. The tank must produce sufficient vapor, while the regulators and piping must carry that fuel at the required pressures. A larger tank cannot correct undersized piping, and a larger regulator cannot make up for inadequate tank vaporization. Some properties use separate tanks instead. PERC highlighted a 2025 residential project that installed one 500-gallon tank for household appliances and another 500-gallon tank for the standby generator. Separate storage can increase fuel independence, but it is not necessary for every home.

How Should You Size Propane Storage Before Installation?

Start with the exact standby generator model and its published propane consumption at partial and full load. Then estimate the desired outage runtime and add the propane needs of household appliances that may operate simultaneously. Next, ask a qualified propane professional to review tank vaporization, regulator capacity, gas-line size, pressure requirements, climate, minimum expected tank level, and delivery access. PERC states that propane installations should be performed by trained professionals and follow applicable NFPA 54, NFPA 58, and local requirements. You do not automatically need a larger propane tank simply because you are installing a standby generator. You do need enough storage and fuel-delivery capacity for the generator under realistic outage conditions. If your current tank leaves little runtime, struggles with winter demand, or cannot meet the generator manufacturer’s requirements, increasing tank size before installation can create a far more dependable backup-power system.

LP Propane Ignite Program – Terms and Conditions

1. Eligibility and Program Requirements
To qualify for and maintain enrollment in the LP Propane Ignite Program and receive the $0.05 per gallon fuel discount, the Customer must simultaneously enroll in and maintain active status in the following three core services:

Auto Fill Delivery: The Customer authorizes LP Propane to automatically monitor, schedule, and deliver propane to the designated tank when levels dictate, bypassing the standard Will Call scheduling requirements.

Auto Pay: The Customer must maintain a valid, authorized payment method on file (Credit Card, Debit Card, or ACH/Direct Draft). Invoices will be automatically drafted within 7 days after the delivery.

Paperless Billing: The Customer agrees to receive all invoices, statements, and program communications via email. Opting out of online billing or requesting paper statements will result in a $4.95 monthly fee and disqualification from the program.

2. Fuel Discount Terms

The $0.05 per gallon discount applies exclusively to the standard market rate of propane at the exact time of delivery.

The discount is applied automatically on invoice.

This discount cannot be combined with specific commercial contract pricing or volume discounts unless expressly authorized in writing by LP Propane.

3. Tank Monitoring and Delivery Access

LP Propane may utilize physical tank monitors or advanced usage-tracking algorithms to schedule deliveries.

Access Requirements: The Customer must ensure the propane tank is always completely accessible to delivery personnel and vehicles. The pathway must be free of obstacles, locked gates, debris, or unrestrained animals within a 100-foot radius.

Seasonal Maintenance: During winter months, the Customer is legally responsible for clearing snow, ice, and paths leading to the tank. If a delivery vehicle cannot safely access the tank, the delivery will be delayed, and any emergency filling fees incurred due to subsequent low fuel levels will be billed to the Customer.

4. Credit Status and Payment Failures

If an Auto Pay transaction is declined or fails for any reason (e.g., expired card, insufficient funds), the Customer must update their account billing details immediately. If the transaction remains unprocessed for 30 days despite attempts by LP Propane to contact the Customer, the account will be automatically unenrolled from the program.

If an account balance becomes past due, LP Propane reserves the right to suspend Auto Fill privileges, pause the $0.05 per gallon discount, and transition the account to a "Will Call / Cash on Delivery" basis until the account is brought current and after review and approval of LP Propane’s credit department.

5. Program Termination or Changes

Customer Termination: Removing any of the mandatory components (Auto Fill, Auto Pay, or Paperless Billing) constitutes voluntary termination from the program. If you would like to opt out of the Ignite program you must submit 30 day written notice

Company Modifications: LP Propane reserves the right to alter, modify, or terminate the Ignite Program framework, including discount amounts or underlying eligibility terms.
