Propane is among the most versatile and used fuels in the US. From backyard grilling to heating your home, powering an RV, or powering industrial equipment, propane tanks are a must-buy. But prior to purchase, it would be helpful to know the price breakdown and where to purchase. Prices vary significantly based on tank size, material, brand, and where you buy them, so having an idea of what you should be looking for makes it easy. The breakdown below is an easy-to-understand explanation of the price of propane tanks, why prices vary, and where to buy them at the lowest price.
Purchasing a propane tank isn’t simply penning a check for the cylinder, there are some added costs to keep in mind that you don’t want to overlook. Being aware of each of these components allows you to plan accordingly.
Tank size is the biggest expense. A tiny 1 lb throw-away tank will cost merely $5, whereas a giant 500-gallon stand-alone tank can cost between $1,500 and $3,500. The bigger the tank, the higher the upfront cost but lower the cost of propane per gallon in the long run.
Above-ground tanks are cheaper, a 500-gallon tank being $1,200–$1,800 on average. Underground tanks require digging and installation, the cost going up to $2,500–$5,000 depending on the labor and soil.
Purchasing a propane tank provides single ownership but is initially more expensive. Leasing saves upfront cost (as low as $50–$200 annually) but ties you to one propane distributor, typically with higher per-gallon prices.
Brand tanks with protective coatings, resistance to corrosion, or reliability are costlier than normal tanks. For example, premium composite propane tanks may be as much as 50% costlier than typical steel tanks.
New tanks give protection and long life but are expensive, while second-hand tanks cost $100–$300 for small and medium tanks. Second-hand tanks will, however, have to be recertified before filling.
Installation of large tanks is a serious consideration. This could include delivery charges, site preparation costs, regulator installation, and safety inspections. Installations cost an average of $500–$1,000 for residential-sized tanks.
There’s a propane tank in every size imaginable for any use, ranging from the weekend camping trip to warming the whole house. Knowing the average price by size assists you in planning ahead.
Perfect for lanterns and camp stoves. One tank is $4–$8. Not removable but ideal for short outdoor adventures.
A new standard grill cylinder costs $40–$60 and refilling is $20–$30. They can easily be found at exchange stations, filling stations, and hardware stores.
Most appropriate for camper vans and RVs, a 30 lb cylinder will cost between $80–$100. Refilling will be around $25 and is most suitable for frequent visitors.
They run $150–$200 when new and are best used for warming cabins, small houses, or heavy loads such as dryers. Refilling costs between $70–$90.
A 250-gallon tank for a small or medium-sized house will run $500–$1,000. Installation would add another $500 depending on the needs of a region.
A 500-gallon tank would cost $1,200–$2,500 and a 1000-gallon tank would cost $2,500–$5,000. These are common in big houses or farms where propane is required for year-round use.
Small and medium-sized propane cylinders, 20–100 lbs, are transported by chains like Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Ace Hardware. They usually include exchange places for convenience.
Most service stations will also include exchange booths where you can exchange a spent cylinder of 20 lbs for a full one. Slightly more costly for the convenience but 24/7 open.
Specialty propane retailers sell and rent tanks in any capacity, ranging from large household and business tanks to small tanks. Installation and maintenance packages are available as well.
Internet sellers such as Amazon, Walmart, and U-Haul offer competitive prices for small- to medium-sized propane tanks, sometimes with delivery.
Tractor Supply Company and the like carry propane tanks from 20 lbs up to 500 gallons and are a great choice for farm customers.
Purchase used tanks on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or local classifieds to save money. Just make sure to check certification and safety compliance prior to buying.
Safety and longevity are priorities when purchasing a propane tank. 12–20 years is the lifespan of well-maintained steel tanks, composites even longer. Tanks have to be regularly inspected for any element of rusting, denting, or leakage. Tanks have also to be recertified 12 years from production date and then every 5 years thereafter. Having your tank safe doesn’t just keep your investment safe, but it also guarantees good performance.
Propane is a costly commodity, but saving on some occasions can be achieved. Purchasing a large tank has the impact of decreasing the cost per-gallon since it is cheaper, particularly for homeowners that utilize propane annually. Seasonal offers, purchasing in bulk, and discounts from nearby dealers are some other cost-saving measures. Leasing initially and later purchasing, if funds are limited, can also be achieved. Shopping between stores and propane dealers prevents unnecessary expenses, and used tanks may be an inexpensive option if properly inspected.
The investment of buying a propane tank is worth it, but having an idea where to buy and how to divide the cost makes all the difference. From tiny throwaway cylinders to humongous buried tanks, the costs vary according to size, material, and installation requirements. Leasing is fine for some, but for long-term savings, along with the freedom to switch suppliers, ownership is best. Whether you use propane for family backyard barbecues, household space heating, or fueling a farm, the right propane tank means safety, efficiency, and value. By being an intelligent consumer and understanding your purchasing choices, you can make an informed decision that is suitable for your needs and your finances.
